Does Medicare Cover GLP-1 Medications for Weight Loss?

For many people, maintaining a healthy weight becomes more challenging with age. As GLP-1 medications continue to receive attention for their role in weight management, you may be wondering whether Medicare helps pay for these prescriptions.

For now, the answer is no when the medication is prescribed only for weight loss. However, as of July 1, 2026, Medicare launched a temporary initiative called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge that offers limited access to certain weight loss medications for eligible beneficiaries.

What are GLP-1 medications?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. These medications were created to treat type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels and promoting weight loss. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now approved several GLP-1 medications for chronic weight management in adults with obesity.  

Does Medicare currently pay for GLP-1 medications used for weight loss?

Not at this time. Medicare Part D generally excludes coverage for medications prescribed only for weight loss. However, if your healthcare provider prescribes a GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic® or Wegovy® to treat type 2 diabetes or certain cardiovascular conditions, your Medicare Part D plan may provide coverage, depending on your plan's benefits.

What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary program designed to expand access to certain FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for weight loss. Although participants must be enrolled in Medicare Part D, the Bridge program operates separately from the standard Part D payment process.

The program began July 1, 2026, and is scheduled to end December 31, 2027.

Who is eligible?

You may qualify for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge if you:

• Are enrolled in a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage (MAPD).
• Have been diagnosed with obesity by your healthcare provider.
• Have a documented medical need for prescription medication as part of a weight management treatment plan.

Which medications are included?

The program currently includes the following FDA-approved weight loss medications:

• Foundayo®
• Wegovy® (injection and tablet)
• Zepbound® (KwikPen®)

What will participants pay?

People who qualify for the program pay a $50 copayment for each 30-day supply of a covered medication.

How does the approval process work?

To begin, your healthcare provider submits a prior authorization request along with your prescription to a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) central processor. After your information is reviewed and approved Yes. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge only applies to medications prescribed for weight management. If you're taking a GLP-1 medication for type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular risk reduction, those prescriptions continue to be processed through your regular Medicare Part D coverage when, the claim is processed, and your pharmacy can fill the prescription.

Are there any limitations?

Yes. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge only applies to medications prescribed for weight management. If you're taking a GLP-1 medication for type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular risk reduction, those prescriptions continue to be processed through your regular Medicare Part D coverage when eligible.
